Zanzibar has hundreds of hotels, from backpacker hostels to ultra-luxury villas. But how do you choose the right one for you? Here are my top insider tips to guarantee a perfect holiday.

1. The "Tidal Truth" (Know Your Coast)

The most important thing to know about Zanzibar is that we have extreme tides, especially on the East Coast (Paje, Jambiani, Matemwe). When the tide goes out, the ocean can retreat for over a kilometer!

• If you want to swim all day: Choose the North Coast (Nungwi or Kendwa) where the tide rarely affects swimming.
• If you love kite surfing and reef walks: The East Coast is your paradise. The low tide reveals beautiful starfish and coral pools.

2. Boutique Hotels vs. Mega All-Inclusives

Many travelers default to booking massive 500-room all-inclusive resorts. While these are convenient, they often isolate you from the real Zanzibar. You eat buffet food and miss out on the incredible local culture.

I highly recommend booking smaller, locally-owned Boutique Hotels. They offer personalized service, incredible authentic Swahili seafood, and a much quieter, romantic atmosphere. Plus, it encourages you to explore local restaurants!

3. Location is Everything for Excursions

Zanzibar is bigger than you think! Driving from a remote hotel on the North Coast down to the South for the Safari Blue tour can take over 2 hours each way.

• If your main goal is taking tours (Spice Tour, Prison Island, Jozani Forest), consider staying your first two nights near Stone Town. It is the central hub for all excursions, which will save you a lot of time and taxi money.
